Two hundred years ago, on 16 August 2019, peaceful crowds gathered at St Peter’s Field in Manchester to hear speeches on electoral reform and equal representation. By the end of the day around 18 people had been killed, cleared by magistrates and cavalry who panicked at the sight of so many thousands.
Unite in Love takes Peterloo as the starting point for a journey through the history of protest art. It travels from trade union banners to cardboard placards via a mix of media, finishing with a specially-commissioned poster by artist Rebecca Strickson.
